One of my favorite quotes about gratitude is by Meister Eckhart: If the only prayer you say in your life is “Thank you” that would suffice.
Today, I am thankful for many things, including:
The unconditional love of my family and dear friends;
My enthusiasm for being able to do the work that I love;
The many, many blessings I enjoy due to good health;
The comfort and nurturing feeling of my warm home;
My wonderful memories – and the fact that I can remember!
The joy and laughter I’ve experienced this year;
My sense of wonder, and the way I sometimes capture it in photos; and
My appreciation for the serendipity in my life, and all the things that “happen for a reason.”
As I was writing this morning, my dad sent me a “Happy Thanksgiving” email which included a story about gratitude. Perfect timing!
I Wish You Enough
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.
Thank you, Dad.
As John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
And finally, in the words of Trixie Koontz, dog: “When every day heart swells with gratitude for all gifts of life, you are on brink of bliss.”
May your heart swell with gratitude, this Thanksgiving and always.
